After moving to the bay area some thirteen years ago I was introduced to the Native American Flute, the sound was like nothing I had ever heard, one day at a crafts fair I heard that sound again, there was a man playing a bamboo flute, from that day on after purchasing a flute I was hooked.
I still have that flute to this day and it still plays like the day I bought it, My journey with the Native American Flute has brought me to many places it has helped me come out of my shell and express from with in, I have meet many people and thank everyone for there support on this journey.
Painted Spirit was inspired by the Native American style Flute (NAF) the traditional sound has inspired me to continue my journey with the NAF, being used as a traditional and contemporary instrument, painted spirit’s mission is to restore the original NAF in style and design still keeping the instrument as a playable flute for the beginner to the advanced player.
Painted Spirit will keep developing the NAF as a contemporary instrument that provides an outstanding quality and sound the flute will be tuned to musical standards.
All flutes are hand made and crafted with hand selected wood, the flutes are coated with a non toxic finish.
The Artist
Award-winning artist Donnie Martinez paints as a spiritual outlet. Drawing from his ancestry, his works are primarily of Native American subject matter and, like his ancestors, Donnie's work often starts with a dream or a vision which he is compelled to explore on canvas.Born in 1965 in the small Colorado mountain town of Grand Junction, Donnie feels blessed to have grown up with the beauty of the Grand Mesa and the Book Cliffs around him. Using the rich, earthy colors and symbols native to Colorado and traditional Southwestern arts, he skillfully paints with acrylics, watercolors and, his favorite, oils.
Throughout his life Donnie was recognized for his artistic talent, winning outstanding artist of the year on more than one occasion. At 19, he moved to Denver to study communication arts at the Colorado Institute of Art. He has been designing and illustrating as a living for the past 24 years. Donnie currently resides in the San Francisco Bay Area.
